I'm seeing Western Digital internal hard drives everywhere: Staples, Office Depot, Sam's Club, CompUSA. The prices are pretty good, occasionally excellent. But I never had one, and don't know whether to trust them--my Macs are mostly full of Hitachi DeskStars, and I've never had one of those fail (knocking on wood).

WD drives are cheap, but cheap can be false economy when you've got a lot of valuable data to protect.

What's the general opinion on Western Digital hard drives?

Tom

I've used nothing but WD in recent years for desktop drives (I swear by Hitachi/IBM notebook drives though) and generally found that they're quiet, fast and reliable. Out of 10 drives over the last 5 years, they're all still going strong, which is more than can be said for drives I've had from the likes of Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung (though I do have a rather elderly 20GB Maxtor drive that has seen 24x7 service for yonks and never given me trouble despite the funny clonking noise it started making a year or so ago).

Seagate drives are quieter than WD, but run hotter. IBM/Hitachi had some trouble with desktop drives (namely the 75GXP) a few years ago that gave them a bad name, but the 7K250 is AFAIK, the fastest 7200RPM desktop drive on the market. The WD 'JB/JD' (Caviar SE) drives used to be performance kings, but they havn't really changed their drive technology much over the years, so they're now slightly behind Hitachi (though Maxtor drives still look slow) - really performance is quite irrelevant - these are all fast drives and if you really cared that much about performance, you'd use SCSI or SATA enterprise drives ;)
