Hi Tom,

I've always had good luck with Western Digital. One in particular, the 6.4 GB system drive in my wintel server box, has been running pretty much constantly for the last 8 years with 2-30 GB data drives coming up on about 5 years each. And there are a couple even older, smaller WD's running in my two 6400/200 machines.
Seagate and Fujitsu have been good as well.

Maxtor seems to the brand most widely available around here these days and I've really had no problems with them. Maxtors run my 2 B&W's, the Compaq P4 box and Sun Ultra.

Hitachi DeskStars... Grr-r-r! 'Bout a year ago, I bought a Hitachi 120 GB drive... three months later it failed. No warning... nothing! Hitachi graciously replaced the drive under warranty and a month later it too became a paperweight and again no warnings. After several nasty emails, Hitachi replaced the second 120 with a (then) top of the line 250 GB drive. I have that running in a USB enclosure and so far... so good. Fingers crossed! The Hitachi experience in this household prompted the purchase of a Quantum DLT 40 GB tape drive.

ANYway... that's my hard drive experience!

I'm seeing Western Digital internal hard drives everywhere: Staples, Office Depot, Sam's Club, CompUSA. The prices are pretty good, occasionally excellent. But I never had one, and don't know whether to trust them--my Macs are mostly full of Hitachi DeskStars, and I've never had one of those fail (knocking on wood).

WD drives are cheap, but cheap can be false economy when you've got a lot of valuable data to protect.

What's the general opinion on Western Digital hard drives?

Tom
