The only thing really unique about Mac hardware is the use of the PowerPC chip. Any architecture that is different is probably different just to accomodate the PPC architecture. Yes the PowerPC is a great processor, but the new G5s need watercooling to reach 2.5GHz. So, what Im saying is, it looks like maybe the PPC just isnt evolving into a processor that is suitable for laptops or desktops other than high end ones. Sure noone here really likes Pentium 4s and the Itaniums don't seem as fast as either a G5 or an Opteron, but by the time Apple is fully switched over to Intel, they could have some different and much better processors out.
