Microsoft created a new business model in the computing industry that
proved beyond any doubt that you don't need to sell proprietary hardware to
be hugely successful.
Apple could gamble on improving their, what, 3% marketshare worldwide by
having OSX run on standard Wintel hardware.
Even if they don't, hackers could develop OSX for standard Wintel, and
force Apple to make a legitimate version.
