Your "started up with your Mac" sequence is correct? Power up modem,
wait for it to synchronize with the network. Power up LinkSys, wait
for it to finish booting. THEN boot your Mac...
My modem is always powered up (I have WIFI DSL), and I leave the Lynksys
powered up also, and only boot the Mac when I start up.
Check the settings in the router and your mac. Make sure both
devices have valid and correct IP, subnet masks, and router
addresses. Try pinging the router, etc.
How do I ping the router? Once I get the router started it will work just
fine as long as I want to use it.
To ping, use a tool like Network Utility (in OS X) or WhatRoute (in OS 8/9).
When things *aren't* working, inspect the TCP/IP settings in both the
Mac and the router.
And while we're at it... a better description of "not responding"
would help. Are you trying to browse the router? Browse the web?
Check email? Exactly what error message are you getting from exactly
what application?
