I work with a student who it was recommended that he use a trackball. Long story short he's zipping along on an USB MS Optical mouse and the trackball sits on top of the classroom cupboard collecting dust. With the optical mouse, he felt more control and didn't need to worry about trying to stop the ball rolling more than he needed it to. He's also told me that he felt like the mouse was more of an extension of his hand/finger. I've been using the MS Optical mouse as well on my B&W and I got it for under $10 at a PC store. Works right out of the box in X on my B&W. My mom uses a Logitech optical that I got for her at the same store. I find the trackball ok, but feel the mouse faster.
