I also found with the optical that I can use a Letter size sheet of paper
as a mouse pad. The same sheet of paper serves as a notepad for fast
scribbling.
Those small things do have an effect of productivity.

I've been using the MS Optical mouse as well on my B&W and I got it for
under $10 at a PC store. Works right out of the box in X on my B&W. My mom
uses a Logitech optical that I got for her at the same store. I find the
trackball ok, but feel the mouse faster. Oh the original puck mouse made a
good science experiment/model as my students and I took it apart to examine
the innards.
