Win98 is the WORST OS for USB support. I have had it balk at

How many years was USB on the mainboard of PCs and not even
pretended to be supported by Win98? Apple going to all-USB seemed
like a big shot in the arm for the widespread adoption of USB,
finally.
We were getting PC's with USB ports for over a year before Apple came
out with the iMac, possibly two years.
I never saw a *single* USB device until the debut of the iMac. Heck
we *still* have to special-order USB mice with PC systems, by default
they come with PS2 mice, and I've only seen a handful of systems with
USB keyboards.
