Sounds silly maybe, but... have you checked that the number of colors for the screen is set to "Millions"? If not, any screen would look grainy - though a different graininess from what you sometimes get with LCDs set to non-"native" resolutions

Thanks for the input, gentlemen.  I've tried a variety of resolutions
and it doesn't seem to make any difference as far as the graininess
is concerned.  I picked this up at Best Buy.  It's a Mag model
#LT716S.  Len,  you're right the recommended resolution is 1280 X
1024, but still doesn't help.  I guess the next step is to bring my
current project machine an upgraded Sawtooth w/ an ATI 64 meg AGP
graphics card and see how it behaves.  Thanks, again, gents
