Hey, G-Listers!
I just recently acquired a new 17" TFT flat panel monitor and
hooked it up to my upgraded (now G4 500 mhz) Blue & White Smurf
Machine. The texture is extremely grainy, noticeably more so than the
old 17" CRT monitor that was hooked up to it previously. My first
reaction was to download the lastest ATI drivers and see if that would
help (it didn't). I've since replaced the Graphics card with a new
ATI Radeon 7000 (less than $20 on eBay! The guy's got a bunch of them)
and the System Profiler recognizes it and its 32 meg VRAM, but it's
still very grainy. Updating the ROM didn't help either. Ideas,
anyone? Thanking you in advance for your input.

Wise Sage Bruce's response:
Check that you're running it at the right resolution. Many LCDs have
a specific 'native' resolution that they look good at, and look like
crap at others.

It's also possible you got a bad monitor.

What's the make and model of the new panel?

And Len's response:
Flat panels are significantly better when set to their recommended
resolution. Try setting it to that, probably 1280 x 1024 and see what
it looks like.

Thanks for the input, gentlemen. I've tried a variety of resolutions and it doesn't seem to make any difference as far as the graininess is concerned. I picked this up at Best Buy. It's a Mag model #LT716S. Len, you're right the recommended resolution is 1280 X 1024, but still doesn't help. I guess the next step is to bring my current project machine an upgraded Sawtooth w/ an ATI 64 meg AGP graphics card and see how it behaves. Thanks, again, gents

If changing it to the proper resolution does not clear up the grainies, my bet is on a defective monitor. If Best Buy is close enough to you, I would run it over and have them hook it to a known good set up and see what it looks like.
