Well, I'm stumped.

The local Historical Society has a B&W with an Apple OEM Matshita CD drive
which System Profiler indicates "supports CD burning" or words to that
effect.

I could swear that I had tested the drive some time last year, but in any event, after a bad directory problem on the hard disk, I reinitialized &
reinstalled 9.2.2

I saved all the newer prefs and goodies and put them back. To appeearances, the machine is behaving identically. But now Toast (5.0.2 or 5.2, both an older version and a newer are on the machine) refuse to find the CD Writer.
Apple CD Burner does not work.

What gives here? I've found nothing online that indicates that the CR-587
should not work.

It reads CDs, both commercial and homemade, just fine, and the OS 9.2
Install boot disk works in it.

There's a known problem between Toast's extensions and Apple's Disk Authoring and burning in OS 9.

There's an Apple KB article about it, iirc, you have to rename Toast's extension to load first.
