I have a G4/800 iMac Flat Panel running OS 10.3.9. It was doing some
odd things (some items on the desktop had lost their icons, and I had a
buffer under-run while burning an audio book to CD) so I decided to
repair permissions. I run Macaroni for routine maintenance, and was
using it to do the daily, weekly, and monthly tasks and then repair
permissions. The program hangs (in an endless loop I think) on
Permission Repairs.
Does anyone have any clues about how to fix this. The following is the
message I got in Macaroni, just before it seemed to run on endlessly.
Repairing permissions on disk /
*** malloc[809]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x504a80; This
could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an
allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see

: for architecture i386 object:
./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object
(unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't
byte swap it)
I tried force quitting Macaroni and booted up in single user mode. I
ran fsck and nothing was wrong. I ran AppleJack and got the same
message (above) when it tried to repair permissions. It too seems to
go on endlessly trying to repair permissions. It ran for over 30
minutes and did not/would not stop.
Next I tried using Disk Utility. It starts then I get a dialog box
stating "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has lost its
connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please
Quit and relaunch Disk Utility." Upon clicking the Quit Button, I get
another dialog box telling me "Operations still in progress: Disk
Utility still has some operations in progress. Quitting in the middle
of some operations can leave a disk non-operational. Are you sure you
want to quit?" Relaunching Disk Utility yields the same results.
The mention of iTunes in the message, and the fact that I had just had
a buffer under-run while burning disks (large book requiring 12 CDs)
leads me to believe that iTunes is the problems.
Any suggestions on fixing this?
