One of the problems is that OS X uses a lot of "virtual memory", i.e. it writes a lot to the boot drive, less so if the machine has a lot of RAM, but it is still an important and unavoidable part of the operating system. If you don't have a lot of space on your boot disk your system might get very slow. If write speeds are slow, same problem. And wear and tear on a solid state boot drive would be pretty high on an X boot drive, as opposed to just a storage drive. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these are things to consider when cobbling together a solid state boot drive with X.
