Pioneer announced it was getting out of the business of making drives
shortly after the DVR-111 was released.

I think they back-tracked, somewhat, but it was clear that they
weren't making much money on drives, what with DVR-111Ds being
available for just under $30 from OWC.

I have no Pioneer drives beyond the DVR-111D as all subsequent
purchases were for SATA drives, for which the Lite-On 20X Litescribe
burner is just about the best one can buy (I do not use the
Lightscribe feature). It is sometimes called "the screamer" as it
spins the media so fast.

I presently have four Intel-based machines, all except one being all-
SATA.

The most recent Intel-based machine got two hand-me-down DVR-110s,
which are PATA, from two Digital Audios.

These are seen as an "Apple Shipping Drive" by MacOS 10.5.5.

The only downside to the -110 and -111 is the speed is 16X, but that
may be artificially limited to 8X by the media.

The "RPC1" folks have lots of firmware hacks for Pioneer drives, and
of those the "BenQ" hacks are the best. These add-back some features
which Pioneer removed for marketing reasons.

Pioneer firmware revisions read something like 1.10.

If the firmware revision reads 8.10, then it is the BenQ version, and
it may indeed offer much higher performance, as well as much greater
media compatibility (support for more media codes).

I generally buy Memorex media, both DVD5 and DVD9, and these are
actually made by Ricoh in Japan.

I inventory about 200 DVD5s and about 50 DVD9s at all times, and the
number of "coasters" I have had with the Memorex/Ricoh media has been
vanishingly small, whether the burner was a Pioneer or a Lite-On.
