What Bruce is getting at is that while the serial modem may have 
"connected" at 49333, the connection may be so poor that it is having to 
retry frequently bringing it's effective speed down considerably. 
Whereas the USB modem may be making a more realistic connection given 
line conditions and is actually communicating at or near the indicated 
speed.
