Worse, that reported number is just the driver's guess at the reported
speed. some old OS 9 modem files simply reported everything at a
single speed.

And then there was "Modem Magic", which was purported to be special
high-speed modem scripts for the Classic OS.

All they did was set the modem string to AT&F8 which was standard AT
'run with all your fast doo-dads enabled' default command, then
published a totally bogus number.

I can, with ten seconds time in bbedit, convince OS 9 that your 56K
modem is actually working at 98K. All it is is changing one text string.

Of course it was largely a placebo effect, except for modems that
didn't properly register the AT extended commands used in classic
modem scripts, people expected faster connections, so they got 'em,
especially if the they paid $49.95 for them...

Modems vary greatly in their ability to handle line noise, etc.

If you're using a modem, make sure all your connections are good, and
that you're using a good phone line. One that's been walked on or cat-
chewed for years probably won't sustain a higher speed connection.
