Len writes,

<The good news is that you do not need to hold the power button for
the three chimes. You press it once, let go and then wait through
three chimes. Should be about 30 seconds of holding command option p-r.

The other contortionist option is to move your keyboard next to your
Mac and use, for example, your thumb to hold the p and your pinky for
the power button.>

Kris writes,

<You don't have to hit the Power (Pwr) key WHILE holding the Cmd-Opt-P-
R keys, you've got a second or two AFTER the chime to get onto the
keys. I normally hit all four keys with my right hand only, the thumb
on the Cmd-Opt pair together, the index on the "R" and the pinky on
the "P" key.

I think Paul has a typo above? I think he meant to say "Then hit the P
and power with my right" instead of "Then hit the R and power with my
right"?

The reason I like the right hand only approach is the simplicity of
moving the finger position to the Cmd-Opt-O-F keys after one of the
Cmd-Opt-P-R chimes. The O & F are adjacent to the P & R keys and it's
a relatively simple transition, and again, you've got a second or so
AFTER the chime to get your fingers onto these keys.>

Clark writes,

<While having the power key on the keyboard certainly simplifies zapping
the PRAM it's not like you actually have to hold down Command-Option-P-R
while turning on the power. You only need to hit the COPR combo
before the chime sounds. I haven't worked on a machine yet that you
couldn't hit power then move your hand(s) over to the keyboard and press
COPR. In most cases it only takes one hand (if the keyboard has Command
and Option on the right side).>

Len, Kris and Clark, ummm, you guys must not only be really coordinated,
but have big hands as well.. ;-)

There is no way in hell I could get my hands positioned on the right keys
in only a couple of seconds. I just can't move my fingers that quickly
anymore, and, my hands are quite small -- for me, performing this
operation absolutely requires that I use two hands.

Ken writes,

<I think a pointy nose would be easier than moving the Mac
out of the corner, clearing the desk so I can open the case,
dropping the side panel and then pulling the battery.>

LOL! Ken, you took the words right out of my mouth! (And, I don't know
offhand where the PRAM battery IS inside this Mac.) I'm going to have to
try it with my nose, but at least finding out I don't have to stay
contorted/keep my nose mashed on the Quicksilver's power button until I
hear the three chimes sounds like a little bit of a help. Which, I guess,
brings us to.....

and on this note, Ken writes again,

<But that is not nearly as entertaining!>

ROFLMAO!!!!!!! But of course, if my BF were here (he was here for the
holiday weekend but went back to NH Sunday afternoon, alas) -- he'd hold
down the keys and I'd just push the power button, with my FINGER. :-)

But, alas, I actually do have to try it. :-( Another
nuke-and-pave/reinstall of OS 9 didn't work. I don't know how or why a
PRAM zap should make my G4 boot OS 9 and not instantly freeze, and I
honestly think it's voodoo for this, but someone suggested I should try
it and I feel that not even trying it is synonymous with not doing
everything I could have done. And who knows, maybe if I just move the
keyboard over a little bit to the right, I won't have to contort quite so
bad.

Ah well, OK, off to give it a try.
