Bingo!! If you are getting the message that Classic is trying to  
start, you are not booted from the CD, but from your HD with OS X.

Insert the CD with 9.2.2 on it then restart holding down the C key. Or  
you can insert the CD and use the startup disk preference pane to  
select the CD then reboot. The startup screen should be, iirc, filled  
with images of CDs or some other startup screen than your normal one.  
That will let you know you are actually booting off of the CD. You  
should be able to install 9 from there.
