Thank you all for your suggestions. Many of them seem helpful. While
the 500MB dmg that Kris suggested is downloading, I wanted to give you
a quick update. If you're not interested in things that don't work,
read no further. :) I'm aware that the FW800 model of the MDD won't
boot OS 9. When I bought the machine from eBay, I didn't know it was
a FW800. I was both glad and sad that it was. Glad because it was
more of a machine than I thought I was buying, but sad because I knew
this model couldn't boot OS 9. Not really a big deal though. I don't
really have any Mac software to speak of, and no real need to boot to
OS 9. I didn't ever think it would really be a problem. To be
honest, I don't remember ever using Classic on this machine prior to
my reinstalling OS X. I did reconfirm that the drive still has the OS
9 drivers installed. I half-way thought the OS 9.2.1 CD would boot.
I know the machine can't boot OS 9, but who says the CD is actually
booting with OS 9? It was worth a try.
Mac User #330250 said that he just did the OS 9 install from the
Finder. When I try that, since I can't boot the disc, I get an error
about not being able to modify the files in the System Folder because
the disc is write protected. I assumed it was talking about the CD.
Idea... Copy the files from the CD to a folder on my Desktop and do
the install from there. That still didn't work. I still got the same
error. I ejected the CD. Then I started getting a notification that
the install needed to modify files in my System Folder on the hard
drive. I clicked the Update button. No dice. Classic looks like it
wants to boot (i.e. I get the Happy Mac and then the big Mac OS 9
splash screen then an error saying this can only be done from the
original media and not if copied to another drive). Oh, and Startup
Disk and Classic (in System Preferences) don't see the copied System
Folder as a valid startup disk. Bummer. Well, my download is down.
I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for all of the great
input.

Lonnie.
