That's probably the easiest way to go; there is no such thing as an  
'incompatible' USB hub.

Yes.

Yes, with the following caveats:

1) they're lower power than a usb hub, some devocess such as some  
flash drives, etc don't work, and almost certainly and seriously bus- 
powered device, such as a drive or scanner, will draw too much current.

2) While they work on older Macs they are NOT fully recognized  
immediately; you cannot use them to boot in a mode than needs keys  
held down, such as safe mode or to boot a CD, etc. I keep an old  
keyboard around for such occasions. That I CAN plug into the extra USB  
port on the keyboard, so once it's done booting I just unplug the old  
one from the new one.
