I believe every time you change PCI cards, you should do the PRAM reset.

That allows the new hardware arrangement to become recognized and set  
for future Startups.

In Tiger and Leopard, I think the drivers for USB 2 are always  
installed originally, but aren't invoked unless USB 2 is present.

Perhaps your USB 2 card is one that just doesn't work in a Mac? Which  
ones may work, has been discussed before, and you could Search the G3- 
G5 list forum. You might find useful info on www.xlr8yourmac.com as  
well.
