Yup, OK, doing that now. "I donno much about Verizon's infrastructure for DSL... but FWIW, several friends here (I realize we're at the other end of the state from you) are having problems also. They loose connectivity, most often while idle, but sometimes when not, then no DHCP server responds to their router (or Mac if connected directly). This started in early December, and continues as of yesterday. Usually power-cycling the dsl modem/router fixes things, but one friend has taken to smacking the modem with a bowling pin (don't ask; I donno)." Okay, here's the specific problem: it's not with the Internet connection itself, which thus far has always been up and running beautifully every single time I use it, but rather what happens to the Macs in my Ethernet connection when I go online while trying to move stuff from one Mac to another across the network. What I lose is the connections between Macs, and to get it back I have to shut off the DSL modem (PITA) and/or reboot the Macs (worse than PITA, this pisses me off). I think I should perhaps provide some more details about my Ethernet network and exactly what happens, so here's the Technical Info: Mac G4 867 Quicksilver (Tiger 10.4.11) with personal filesharing and printer sharing enabled, network setting to Built In Ethernet. Mac G4 1.5 GHz Mac Mini (Tiger 10.4.2) with personal filesharing enabled, network setting to Built In Ethernet. Farallon etherprint Mac or whatever-it's called going out to run the Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS from the Quicksilver. (I didn't need to print from the Mini) The Quicksilver, the Mini, the Farallon and the DSL modem are all plugged into the Ethernet port (Asante 10T/8). My BF and I had set up the Ethernet network prior to my getting the Verizon high speed internet/phone package and it had been working beautifully. Specifically, 1. I had both QS internal HDs, plus the external HD which was hooked up to the QS, showing up on the Mini's desktop, so I could easily move files from the Mini to the QS, and update backups to the external HD. 2. I had the Mini showing up on the QS's desktop, so when I downloaded simmie stuff from the QS (which had the dialup Internet connection) that I wanted to move over to the Mini to inspect, modify and install in my game, I'd just kick the stuff over fast over the ethernet. Then I decided to go from dialup to high speed and found this Verizon DSL with phone package was actually a little less expensive than what I'd been paying for my separate Verizon Freedom phone service and the dialup ISP account I've had for the past 13 years. Well, since getting the DSL (12/11/09), I lose the ethernet network Mac connections from the desktops, especially if I've been copying files while surfing the Net. Y'know, yes, ethernet is faster than USB but still not something I want to sit and watch the computer actually doing while it does it, so I'd go to Google News or check in on my forums or something, and not only would I lose my ethernet connections on the Macs, but in the middle of the copying, it makes such a mess especially if what I'm doing is updating a backup. GRRR. Then when I'd Go to Network (or access it from a handy sidebar) to try to re-establish the connection, half the time the "other" Mac doesn't even show up -- unless I shut off the modem and/or shutdown/reboot the MACS! Then there's the occasions where I click the alias on the desktop to get at the "other" Mac and I get a spinning beachball of death. These don't go away (I've gone and watched a Trek episode, come back, and it was still there) without a reboot. It seems the only time I can get the Ethernet network to work the way it did prior to getting the DSL (which is how I WANT it to work!) is start from "scratch" -- shut off the DSL modem, reboot both Macs, reconnect on both sides and stay the hell off the Internet while I'm doing anything over the network. :-( Is this something I should call Verizon about? ~Yersinia. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
