I would get a new hard drive and do a clean install of 10.4, see if
that fixes things. When hard drives first start to fail they randomly
lock up. 10.4, 10.3, 9.2, safe mode, single user mode... all these
access the hard drives in slightly different ways. I had very similar
symptoms in my Cube and was lucky enough to copy my files and get a
new hard drive in before the failure become a disaster.
