Another possible cause of freezes is for the CPU heat sink grease to have dried out between your CPU and the heat sink. I'm not saying that the evidence points that way, but it is a common problem (on machines older than the G4) and fairly easy to remedy. It could be that the G4s are reaching an age where this is starting to affect them. I've never seen the grey heat sink grease wear out though, only the whitish stuff. Still, I suppose it could happen. I "fixed" an awful lot of PM7100s by removing the heat sink, cleaning the CPU and the heat sink, applying a dab of new heat sink grease and replacing the heat sink. Might be worth taking a look under the heat sink.
