Thanks everyone, for all suggestions! I've just replaced the G4 QS with my G4 GE, moving the Airportcard with it. I get full reception on this machine, positioned in the exact same place as the G4 QS would be. I think I'm going to try and swap the antenna of the QS to see if it makes any difference.
