First step: try resetting the PRAM : start up while holding down 
command-option-P-R and wait for the third startup bong before releasing it. 
ISTR fixing one of mine that was shutting down like this by clearing the PRAM.

There are also some system prefs files to delete listed here, but I'm not sure 
whether all of them exist in 10.4 or not…
