Regarding my plan to re-install tiger: the QS2002 persistently kernel
panics when attempting to start from firewire drive with 10.4.3 install
dvd image (this has been successful many times as my normal tiger
installer) -
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0036E28C): "Unable to find driver for this
platform:
\"PowerMac3.5\".\n@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.5.20/iokit/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1407
I'm thinking to move from this problem on unless someone has an answer
to this which allows me to re-install tiger.
It seems obvious to me now that the only thing left is the power supply
- but should I have seen this from the problem snippets I have mentioned
so far?

Kris, thanks for the reminder about checking ram.
I used Rember to perform the check, switching the three sticks around
each time to allow for system memory (123, 231, 312) but all passed.
I also tried starting with just one of each stick and still get
shutdown when sleep requested.
I then tried AHT for G4s and that found no problems.
Sometimes a restart works, sometimes it gives shutdown.
By the way, these shutdowns, when they occur, are instant, no disk
work, no question whether to close a file, just instant shutdown and
silence.
I think it unlikely to be hdd problems as it occurs with tiger on two
different hdds.
I've tried two pram batteries and the date & time are being reserved
over several days.
I've also tried starting without pram battery and, apart from being
told the date is wrong, the sleeps still shutdown.
I'll do a complete system re-install (the two systems are identical,
one being a clone of the main hdd) - this is about the last resort.

This morning I have managed to reset the pram - and it has just shut

Instant shutdowns are often caused by bad RAM. You should probably
troubleshoot the RAM.
I’d open it up, remove all the RAM, visually inspect the gold trace
leads, and reinstall.
A PPC Ubuntu boot CD has MemTest in the initial boot menu, or find a
similar Mac boot CD with a RAM test.
Other things you can do is start with a single stick of RAM, use the
computer, if the problem disappears, then add another stick, until
you either determine which stick is bad, or find the problem is
either not related to RAM, or was the bad seating of the RAM within
the slot.
