I'm not dissing dx, but no-one can just expect me to learn a programming language and just jump straight into dx - I need to learn the more basic libraries first before I start jumping into things like that - that's all.

There is simply no need to look at every library for sound, input, etc. DX does it all and one reason Microsoft wrote it was so that game devs had a one stop shop for everything they need for gaming sound, input, networking, etc. Back When Win 95 first came out there was no universal tool like DirectX Gaming used. Game companies wrote there own audio and input handling libraries or used basic Windows ones.
