Hi Nicol,
The question isn't really about what we think about it, but what you
feel deep down in your hart about a thing, and what your relation ship
is with God.
Yes, SOD is an extremely violent game if you think about the type of
things you will be doing to the monsters like cutting them up with
chainsaws, blowing them up with mines, shooting them full of holes with
machine guns, etc... In reality those things are terrible, and against
any Christian moral code. However, do those apply to fiction? Well, that
is an answer you have to think upon, and settle in your own mind and heart.
I know of people like your mother who focus totally on the sin of the
thing, the evil of the thing, and totally demonise it. That is her
choice to do so, and you will have to respect her in her decisions in
that regard.
However, as you pointed out yourself you are a man now, and God gave you
freewill to decide how to live your life. Will you choose to play Shades
of Doom because you enjoy the game, or does your conscious say no. That
question only you can make.
A bit of advice if you are deeply having trouble with this decision seek
the biblical scriptures yourself, and decide upon what they say to you
about your question.
As for me personally I understand that SOD is an extremely violent game.
However, I also know that murdering someone in cold blood is wrong. I
don't believe I would do so unless it was absolutely necessary for my
personal safety or for my family. For me the game is ok as I can enjoy
the fiction, but not act out with the same violence in reality.
If we really want to be realistic about this thing even in the bible
there are times the use of deadly force were used and even demanded by
God. Think of Moses, Joshua, David, etc... Those men were not inosent of
shedding blood, they were warriors, and they were no wussies either.
When Goliath stood out there putting down the army of Israel David went
out there and kicked his rear. God was behind him all the way, and David
himself said so.
Your mom might remember the bible has it's share of blood and gore as
well. Justifiable as it might be violence is all around us. The trick is
not to become violent killers with no heart and compassion.
