Hi Jacob, Well, number one Windows 8 can't upgrade Windows XP. According to the Microsoft system requirements you must be running Windows Vista or higher so if you tried upgrading an XP virtual machine with Windows 8 no wonder it failed. :D
Regarding drivers the release candidate had a limited driver database, but the full release of Windows 8 has a fairly complete driver database. That said, there is some older hardware that simply is not Windows 8 compatible nor ever will be because it is just too old.. I'm not sure how reliable this is but I heard in a nutshell Windows 8 supports hardware clear back to around 2006, and anything produced before that is considered out of date and unsupported which makes sense as anything produced before then wouldn't have the CPU power, memory, and graphics technology to really run Windows 8 anyway. When I did install Windows 8 into VMWare Player 5 I got it working, but it took quite a lot of system resources to run it side by side with another OS. Especially, if that other OS was Windows 7. LOL. Cheers!
