Well, the RC install package didn't complain, and let me run the upgrade install - although wasn't a true upgrade, since, yes, it just wiped out the windows XP instance, but, let me initiate it via XP, on the windows XP laptop, which was a showroom demo model had gotten hold of in late 2006, so, might just be that it couldn't handle hardware on that borderline, or something, but, it seemed happy enough to install as an upgrade, but, just didn't seem to want to work with the sound card, although it seemed to be showing up in it's form of device manager - don't remember too many details, since lost interest quite quickly/soonish...<smile>

And, yes, the VMWare install was just a form of experiment, and definitely not a high spec virtual machine, since it was just a copy of my standard, backward compatibility virtual machine, which generally run under my windows7 64 bit machine pretty much just for running software that's not too happy with the newer configuration, etc...<smile>

Will still one day most likely move/shift over to windows8 as well, since windows is my primary operating system platform, but, suppose that since my primary work target environment is still linux web servers, that's also why play around with ubuntu/vinux virtual machines as well - was nice that could get that one going from scratch all by itself, just using the ctrl + N keystroke from VMWare player's free version...LOL!

Stay well

Hi Jacob,

Well, number one Windows 8 can't upgrade Windows XP. According to the
Microsoft system requirements you must be running Windows Vista or
higher so if you tried upgrading an XP virtual machine with Windows 8
no wonder it failed. :D

Regarding drivers the release candidate had a limited driver database,
but the full release of Windows 8 has a fairly complete driver
database. That said, there is some older hardware that simply is not
Windows 8 compatible nor ever will be because it is just too old.. I'm
not sure how reliable this is but I heard in a nutshell Windows 8
supports hardware clear back to around 2006, and anything produced
before that is considered out of date and unsupported which makes
sense as anything produced before then wouldn't have the CPU power,
memory, and graphics technology to really run Windows 8 anyway.

When I did install Windows 8 into VMWare Player 5 I got it working,
but it took quite a lot of system resources to run it side by side
with another OS. Especially, if that other OS was Windows 7. LOL.

Cheers!

Problem was also, from my side that tried taking a copy of a windows XP
virtual machine, to then try run the windows8 installation/upgrade
inside/into it, and it pretty much immediately told me virtual hardware
wasn't compatible/enough.

And, will also just mention that specific to windows8, when tried to install

the release candidate trial on my one slightly older primarily windows XP
laptop, biggest issue was that it's built-in realtek sound card/adapter
seemed to be incompatible with windows 8 after install - had to use it along

with a slightly newer external USB sound-card/adapter to get any sound at
all, and my guess is that windows 8 isn't too backward compatible, or
something, since while the laptop isn't newest piece of machinery, sound
card still works fine since rolled it back to windows XP only
installlation.
