Hi Tom.
Well there are of course bad anime, indeed my brother and his friends
sometimes collect some of the more atrocious ones to laugh at.
Garzy's wing for example is absolutely famous for being the worst dub in
history! it was a fairly generic and not too interesting fantasy series to
begin with in Japanese, but then lets say the people who dubbed it into
english didn't do the best job.
The first episode (I've seen the first episode but couldn't take anymore),
begins with the hero, a young student riding down the road on his motor
bike. A voice oover of his speaks and the lines are something like this:
"Well it has happened, I have finally finished colidge. I failed, but that
is not the important thing. no the most important thing about colidge is the
pool! party!"
He then gets dragged into a random fantasy world where he has to go on a
mystical quest. As part of this quest he is told he must see the great
spirit who will give him a crystal to expand his mind. the hero then
replies:
"Yes, in our world we have things that expand people's minds too, ---
they're called drugs and they're a bit dangerous!"
People apparently buy the series just because it is so wonderfully awful!
:D.
I thik generally it's more the case that while there are definitely generic
and bad anime, (garzy's wing wasn't that great even in Japanese), there are
still a lot of tallented people telling quite unique stories, sadly that
doesn't seem true in the west half as often.
one interesting thing I will say, is that while my brother and I usually get
together to watch Anime, over the past few months we've been getting
together to watch the Game of thrones series instead, (once I'd read the
books), so there are occasionally good things even now, though it seems
they're not as common.
Thankfully sthe the same is not true of audio games, indeed things seem to
be very much improving, especially when a game with such a simple idea as
Blind swordsman can be made so engaging, which of course relates back to our
discussion a few weeks ago about game mechanics and judgement.
Beware the grue!
Dark.
