Lori,
Filtch is guided by the AI function. At each turn it decides which way he should go. This is a random choice, so him catching you in the Great Hall is just a bit of bad luck. If you get to the room with the string I suggest closing the door behind you. At this point in the game, Filtch can't open or unlock any doors.
You're not totally safe as the ghosts can go through walls.
