Hi Jim, Quote > I'm thinking that this would be the same for any and all games that write to > a file such as a save game file, a log file, a records file or whatever right? End quote
I've just tested this with several other games and you are correct. Allot of older accessible games are going to be facing this problem under Vista. The issue is that Vista and XP are more multiuser environments than say 98. If you run a game as administrator they will work ok. However, if you setup a multiuser environment such as I have for myself and my wife and then the games are going to encounter difficulties. Especially, with non-administrator users. Quote > As far as I know just about every single game does this. So I am thinking > that this is not a problem with my games, but a problem that Vista creates > and thus the Vista user is going to have to learn to deal with it not only > for my games but for all games. End quote Yes and no. With Windows 98 it was not real important where you saved your game settings since 98 was meant for single users, and less a multiuser environment. With Windows 2000, XP, and Vista all program settings should go into the c:\Documents And Settings\User Name\Applications Data folder rather than being saved to the applications root directory. Saving to the applications root directory is fine if there is only going to be one user account on the system, the administrator account, as the user will have the rights to save to that application root directory. If more than one user is setup then the game has to use the user's Application Data folder instead. I've checked out montezuma's Revenge, and truthfully I made the same mistake as everyone else. However, I am now researching the issue, and trying to see how to make the game operate in a multiuser environment rather than a single user environment. Bottom line, it is a problem with your games in that they were not designed for networked or multiuser setups under Vista which is now the rule and not the exception to the rule. I made the same mistake, and I understand where you were coming from in designing your games as you did. Quote > And truthfully you are the first to mention this and I know many people > that are playing my games in Vista. Plus you didn't even have this problem > before in Vista with my games. > End quote > I didn't have this problem before because I had Vista setup as a single user environment, and I was playing the games using the administrator acount with administrator rights. I am suspecting the user's you have just mentioned were doing the same. They don't have a multiuser environment configured thus never encountered the issue. However, Microsoft does state that using the system in this way is less secure than a standard user account for day to day tasks and an administrator account for system changes. As for the tone of this message I'm not sure, but I sense some anger or friction in the way you worded your responces. All I will say is that my intent was not to flame, anger, put down, or in anyway put you or your games down. I merely was offering information about the problem i found, and I gave you three possible solutions to the problem users could try if they encounter the same issue I am having with your games in a multiuser environment. --- Gamers mailing list __ [email protected] If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org.
