Hi Che,
You are right up to a point that allot of this is up to personal
preference. However, having multiple user accounts on the system is as
much a matter of system security as much as personal preference. I don't
care if the statistics show that it is 1000 to 1 blind users only use
administrator accounts the fact remains they are at higher risk for
virus attacks and other malware than that 1 single user who played it
safe and restricted his usage of the system to standard account rights only.
I am certain allot of blind users feel as you and Jim do. However, most
of them never have spent any time doing research on Windows security
either. Otherwise, they would not be running as administrators. They
should be running standard user accounts the same way it is setup in
Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and any other secure operating environment.
When Microsoft released Vista it really got on the ball with using
similar security measures as Linux and other Unix environments, and yet
allot of Vista users are still running blindly as administrator either
ignoring or unaware of how unsecure that action really is.
When game developers refuse or decide not to make changes to their games
to use the tighter security measures, and say just use the administrator
account, in effect they are adding to the problem. They are saying it is
ok to run the system in a less secure state.
Understand I am not trying to be critical here. I am just trying and
failing to educate the developers and users on the list on how to make
their systems and games more secure. In order to properly secure a
Windows system games will have to be modified to meet current
programming standards. I'm afraid I have failed to make that point, and
developers aren't going to listen.
I'll agree with anyone who says I am blunt, sharp tongued, and have some
rough edges. However, it is all because I am genuinely concerned that
the game developers on this list are going to recommend users use
Vista's administrator accounts which is simply bad security polacy. I'm
sorry, but I can not apologise for strongly taking issue with anyone who
recommends bad security polacy in order to take a little time out of
their life and just do things the right way.
