Yes, I have. In Jedi Knight II Mara had the power of Farsight. That 
ability allowed her to leave her body via the force and walk through a 
wall, door, or other obstruction to see what was in the room. While the 
farsight mode was on you could use the normal movement keys to move  the 
force version of Mara Jade around.
The Monty game engine already has something like this called view map 
mode. I thought I could modify it, add the farsight effect to it, and 
allow your character to move around the 2D world the same way. It is 
easier than totally upgrading the engine to move in 3D directions, but 
it could be done.
I've also thought about using a detection key on d which lists all the 
enemys in visible range, and as you arrow through them you would hear 
something like:
"Storm trooper above and to the left."
I don't know some of this is still piliminary so I might still keep a 3D 
game which would be unique for this community.
