Hi Shaun,
Because the Atari game limited you to a specific number of certain
items. You could only carry a maximum of four swords at a time. the
potions, which replaced the amulets in Monty, are very powerful magic
items. They will be able to do more than restore lost health points, but
will give you a temperary amount of invincibility in future versions of
the game.
You see, in the original game if you picked up a magic amulet you could
use it to give yourself invincibility from monsters while walking
through a dangerous room. For example, that room in level 1 with the
three skulls and two gems. If you used a magic amulet before opening the
door to that room you could walk in and the skulls can do no damage
unless you directly landed on one. Since magic potions do something
similar besides the health boost they will give you some invincibility
against monsters for a limited amount of time like 20 seconds or so.
They will not be able to attack and hurt you while you are under the
invincibility magic.
So this will add allot more strategy uses for a magic potion. Sure you
might want to use one when your health is low, but you will also want to
use one in a difficult room where you know you might get injured. For
example, the room with two snakes. It might be tactically better to
drink a potion before getting bitten rather than after the fact.
