I have no real experience with programming, but I think I can field this one. Its the same thing that happened to the old godwars codebase. Back when the original godwars codebase was released, one of the players asked KaVir for the code just so he could, quote, have a look. Turns out he wanted to do more than that. Suddenly the codebase was released to the public and now we've got hundreds if not thousands of godwars clones out there, most giving godwars a bad name. In a way I'm kind of glad this happened, as it lead to godwars2, a much more developed game, and one of the most advanced muds on the net, but I can understand why developers would be unwilling to trust your random average joe from the net with the source code. What's to stop someone from taking the source code, making certain spacific changes to it and then marketing it as their own product?
