Hi, yeah, sometimes it is hard to know when you have killed it, but if you do it for a bit, you don't even need steps, since that adds to the creepyness factor. Also, it is kind of hard to know when they are dead, but again, after doing it for a while, you get to know how monsters die and it will be easy.
