That's pretty much all formations are. However, they do help out if you
really pay attention to how your guys are formed up and how every single
skill in the game works. Basically they're either for just the stat boosts,
or for the super strategists. The 1-1, 1-2 stuff is actually coordinates
showing how your puppets are layed out. So for example, if you had puppets
at 1-1, 2-1 and 3-1, they'd be in a straight line facing the enemy. And most
skills, when you read them, show you how they hit, for example, area of
effect, straight line, single enemy, etc. So basically you can put your
puppets in formation like having your two melee guys in front, and a healer
in the back behind them that won't get hit by some skills. But it's kind of
hard to set up and it takes a bit of getting used to with the coordinates
system. As for looking up skills, well if Hal has a mouse over command, most
skills can be seen instantly in battle that way instead of having to look
them up in the guide, which helps some.

Well I've sent the gm an in game message, sinse I must admit having to
look up what a given skill or style is just to know what it does when it's
used on you is really irritating. We'll see if it gets tken up or not.
in fact that seems to be the biggest floor with the game, all item and
skill descriptions are just dumped in a massive set of info pages of doom
and your expected to look them up and remember what they do which is down
right irritating, especially for such a stat heavy game. Myself, I'd much
rather have the chance of finding good stuff or having mysterious enemy
skills that surprise me described in battles than essentially having a
reference of doom.
That being said the battles are fairly good, I've done three dungeons now
(well one twice), and have found some ways to get around the pages very
quickly with Hal's columnization and commands to jump betwene sets of info
quickly, ---- for instance I just type "execute" into Hal's find feature,
then when I've finished setting what my puppets do I just hit f4 to go to
it and read the text undernieth that says what's happened in battle.
I don't know how useful hotkeys would be with hal, though one for instant
execute might be nice.
I'll probably stick with this one for a bit and see what happens, sinse
it's at least still being developed and has a nice system to play with,
even if there are a lot of fights.
One question, what is the 1-1, 1-2 etc in battle? and what was that stuff
about front or back on formations? I didn't get that at all, and as far as
I can see the formations are just essentially a party wide boost of a
given stat.
All the best,
Dark.
