there were some concerns raised originally when proposed (not sure of all
details because apparently most of the conversation was done in IRC and
no report was ever forwarded to this list) but the email thread hopefully
describes most of them :

it was proposed by me for backporting Aug 10th and has always my vote
(only 2 are needed) so if you were OK with your original implementation
it should had been ready for backport.

and updated proposal (also including r1718) that addresses all known
concerns raised added to the backport proposal so it can be reviewed for
future release.

this will be included in 3.1.2 the earliest, while the next 3.1.x release
(3.1.1) could had this feature patched by hand if needed (based on the
backport proposal)
