Actually, I made several updates to the 3.1.x STATUS file in r1716,
which you then removed in r1721.  Included in this was a +1 for this
very patch.

Regarding Ofer Inbar's comments about using hostnames in RRD files, I
agree that we should keep the hostnames in the RRD files.  I don't see
that moving to an arbitrary ID of some sort gains us anything, whereas
the benefits of having hostnames in the RRD filename are many.

The issue with long hostnames in graphs is a side-effect of trying to
use the same variable ("$hostname") for too many things.  This is
fairly deeply embedded in the front-end code, and while there is a
work-around in trunk, it could be handled more elegantly.  But, the
problem is fundamentally a *display* problem, not one dealing with how
the RRD files are stored (thankfully!).
