Fidgetting around with the options proposed in "man gmond.conf", I found that
the IP option below can be avoided.
udp_send_channel {
host = localhost
port = 8649
ttl = 1
}
udp_recv_channel {
port = 8649
}
But that's really a non-scalable solution, as the computer is really just
talking to itself. Question still remains: what are the requisites for that
udp_channel? How can I tell which IP to use, depending on used IPs and network
masks in place ?

Environment: ganglia (3.0.7) over a fresh Fedora Core 8, contained within a
vmware image.
I've installed ganglia by downloading the distro's packages with yum. gmond and
gmetad behave properly when called through telnet (they show the DTD), but
without showing any metrics!! The <CLUSTER> Tag contains nothing at all!! I'm
very puzzled, as I have made no changes to the packages downloaded... I can
only think it is related to some network configuration, blocking in some way
the emission of the metrics when the daemon wants to inform the rest of the
world. But does the daemon need the network to communicate with itself? What
exactly is the IP specified in the gmond.conf "udp_send_channel { mcast_join =
239.2.11.71 }", and what are the requisites to define this UDP channel?
Below appears a test run which shows the different points. Thanks for any hint
of what could be wrong!!
