In my totally uneducated view, the methane,, acetone, etc. are NOT even
in the wood yet as you heat it slowly. You have to get up to the
temperatures where the "destructive distillation" occurs to break down
existing chemicals into those other components that you list. You need
temps high enough to disassemble and maybe recombine things like the
cellulose and the famous "pyrolignous acids". I'm thinking well over
100°C to even start most of those processes.

By rights, then the methane should come out first, but I never see flames
shooting out of the butt ends (or the worm hole pores) until the water is gone.
What is going on?
