The easiest way to troubleshoot a problem with protocol X not being able to get out (or in, for that matter) is to simply watch your firewall logs while trying to use protocol X. You'll see what it's trying to do, which port it's trying to go out from, which port the host that it contacts it trying to send back on, etc. You will then be able to make a decision as to whether or not you should open those ports as per your security model.
