Isn't the 3c509, 3c509B series of cards only 10Mbs ethernet while the 3c905, 3c905B series of cards 10/100Mbs capable.
I personally have a pair of 3c905B cards in my GNat box (the 10/100T cards) and they are both running very nicely at the 100Mbs speed. I suspect the original poster was talking about the 509 cards because he said they were available for cheap, which is typically true of the old 10Mbs cards. Locally I've seen them used in the $10-20 range, while the 905 cards are only readily available new for the $70-90 range (Canadian $ so prices would be 33% less for USA).
