I'm using 50 as well. Running a quick Perl script on a few recent logs, I
calculate that it usually has no more than 5 open at once.

Well, I've never seen any "out of memory" errors in the logfiles. Is there any
way to determine memory usage otherwise?

My main firewall handles about a million HTTP hits, two VPNs, 30K - 40K emails,
about a 1Gb of FTP transfers -- in total, over 10Gb of daily traffic without a
hiccup.
