Have you changed the permissions on your /Library folder at all?
Could you try creating a new user account on your system and seeing if you
can
install Gears there?
Why I'm suspicious:
the listing for ls -al /Library/InputManagers/ shows
drwxrwxr-t@ 62 root admin 2108 Sep 2 13:02 ..
Indicating that the sticky bit and finder info is attached to the /Library
folder,
this may be nothing but the /Library directory should have the following
permission:
drwxrwxr-t+ 57 root admin etc...
InputManagers on Leopard are *very* sensitive to the permissions of
/Library/InputManagers , I'm *guessing* that the permissions of your
/Library folder
may be preventing the InputManager from loading.
