This mealworm tale has been going on for a long time. I have heard it from
lizard people, bird people, and even sugar glider people. I work at a vet
practice and have seen animals chewed on the outside by insects, but have
never seen one chew its way from the inside out. I have also never seen
anyone document a case of this happening.
        You must consider that most animals crush the head of the prey or chew it
up while consuming it. If a bug could survive that, then they also have to
deal with the acidity of the stomach and the lack of air. Surviving that
and chewing their way out seems really unlikely to me.
