Josh,

If it will help any, you can cite my example - that I bought a juvenile
leopard gecko at Petco last January (although they didn't give me any
information about how to care for it), it was in good condition (although
I've read a lot of messges flaming Petco stores) and is in fine condition
now, 9 months later (coming up on a year).

This was my first experience keeping a leopard gecko, and my first serious
adult experience with a lizard, so I'd say it has been pretty successful.

Between you and me, I think keeping a lizard, even a leopard gecko, can be
difficult for a beginner, and children would need much supervision and help
from an adult. Adults also need hand-holding and questions answered. I
credit my pet's survival, even now, to the leopard gecko's incredible
resiliency and to this list, that I came to for answers about how to take
care of him. Of course, in retrospect, I was a real worrier and probably a
good care sheet, recommended by a knowledgeable breeder, would have gone a
long way. A book that was recommended to me (probably a good many on the
list remember my references to it) certainly did ease my worries and taught
me a lot.

BTW, speaking of Leopard Geckos, they are a fine example of captive breeding
taking over wild-caught. I have heard a figure of 90 or 95% captive-bred,
and I think they have only been bred in this country for 10 years or so.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. If you make up a
letter-sized poster (it can be in color), I would be happy to print it out
and bring it to pet stores in my area.

Steve
